About
Hi, my name is Mario and I was born in Cuba, but to be quite honest, I never truly considered myself a true Cuban. I suppose that for the only child of two Cuban immigrant parents living in New York City in the mid 1950′s, I had a normal upbringing. All my parent’s acquaintences were Cuban and many of my friends were Cuban as well. But for some reason I just never felt like I belonged.
You see I have always been in awe of the Cuban people. From an early age, I have seen Cubans as being bigger than life. Cubans are many things. They are proud of their heritage. They are always ready to party and speak with the most facinating Spanish dialect that I always found and intriguing but had difficulty in mastering.
No matter how much I tried I founnd myself frustrated with everything Cuban. Instead of embracing my hertiage, I withdrew. I withdrew from the slang talk. I withdrew from the music, the food and most of all I withdrew from my family and friends.
Its funny how things work out. I am now in my mid fifties. My children are grown and my parents are gone. I have been through my share of good times and sad times but my experiences from the last few years have left me with an unquenching thirst to reconnect with all things Cuban.
I created this site to provide some enlightening facts about the Cuban mystic. This will be a project in development and will be updated on an on going basis. I will write about all the Cuban things I remember growing up and provide my opinions on them. I will point out some products and sites from time to time that I find interesting and that add to the Cuban mystic.
I dedicate this work to my father Mario Sr., who past away on September 27, 2008 and who in the last years of his life impressed on me what it means to be Cuban.
I Hope you enjoy my remenicences.
